Lonnie & Juilie Lorton
use a foundation of ground work exercises to
build the communication, trust and respect
needed for a successful riding experience.
Ground work allows the
horse and owner to learn to communicate with each other.
This communication will then transfer to the horse's back.
It also provides a means for the owner to build respect
and trust with their horse. Ground exercises
may include:
Backing
Disengaging front
and hind quarters
Lunging for respect
Flexing the head
and neck from side to side (preparation for the 1
rein stop)
Changing eyes
Side pass along the
fence
Encountering
obstacles, ex jumping barrels
Jumping
teaches horse to handle obstacles. In our
clinics, we will sometimes have the participants
jump their horses while lunging for respect.
Lunging teaches the horse to follow the feel of the
rope, which will later transfer to the rein.
Participants will lunge their horses over
barrels prior to actually jumping them from
horseback.
